The UK government has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This overarching goal serves as the foundation for initiatives like the new EPC target and other similar measures. These efforts are expected to drive a variety of changes over the next decade.
Research by the National Housing Federation reveals that the UK’s inefficient homes contribute 58.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually—more than the UK’s 27 million cars combined, and about 15% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. This is largely due to the widespread use of gas central heating and poor insulation, highlighting the need for government action to improve the energy efficiency of homes.
In response to this challenge, the government has introduced a ban on gas boilers in new homes by 2025, with additional regulations likely to follow. While these changes may feel daunting, it’s important to recognize that they represent a larger shift towards sustainability. Landlords will face new rules, but with the right guidance, they can adapt in a cost-effective way.
